AMBOYThe high school golf season started for Amboy on Aug. 15 and has been as flawless as it can get as the Clippers posted a 2-0 record in their first two meets.

Winning every dual may not be possible, but with two strong senior golfers and a mix of two juniors, five sophomores, and three freshmen, anything is possible.

“I’m pretty excited about this team. Senior Carson Barlow will be fun to watch. I thought he was going to be a better player last year, but he struggled a little bit,” said coach Zach Ross, who has been the Amboy golf coach for 24 years. “He’s been solid so far, the first couple weeks. He shot a 42 at the first meet and shot a 38 on August 22.

“With Barlow and Logan O’Brien (goes to Ashton-Franklin Center), I think having two seniors who know the game of golf helps the rest of the team. These seniors have been around me for four years. They know I expect all my golfers to respect the game, respect the competition, respect the course, and respect the golf club. Whatever the outcome is, that’s what it is in terms of the score. That’s secondary.”

The juniors are Chase Montavon and Gavin Eisenberg, the sophomores are Westin Wittenauer, Michael Ackert, Samuel Navejas, Jason Dickinson, and Gage Mum, while the freshmen are Maddix Beyer, James Williams-Davis, and Ethan Lewis.

“I have a few new guys who decided not to go out for football because of injuries and play golf instead,” Ross said. “Junior Gavin Eisenberg has come a long way. He played a lot of golf in the summer months. Junior Chase Montavon is playing pretty decent right now. He’s shooting in the high 40s but as the year progresses, hopefully his game progresses in the right direction.”

Ross also has high hopes in Ackert, who was the No. 4 or No. 5 golfer throughout last year for the Clippers in his first year as a high school golfer.

If all of them tap, tap, tap it in a little better, Ross thinks this team could make some noise through the season.

“Our biggest improvement we need to make is around the greens. Everyone knows that,” Ross said. “Half of the strokes come from around the green. We have to improve on our putting, and we need to improve on our accuracy off of the tee.”
