AMBOY – Amboy-LaMoille rallied from a halftime deficit to post a 20-14 victory over Galena in a Northwest Upstate Illinois Conference game on Oct. 13 at the AHS field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Galena put a pair of touchdowns on the board in the second period on aerial strikes of 29 and 18 yards from quarterback Henry Anderson, and the Pirates took a 14-0 lead to intermission.
The Clippers finally got their offense in gear in the third stanza when they scored twice to knot the score. Ben Rhine started the scoring for Amboy-LaMoille when he found the end zone from 10 yards out at the 8:21 mark of the third quarter. The extra-point kick was blocked. It was Rhine that did the touchdown honors again with 1:27 left in the third when he powered his way across the goal line from the 2-yard line to make it 14-12.
The Clippers elected to go for two on the conversion attempt and quarterback Justin Hart connected with Reece Vaessen on a pass to make it 14-14. Amboy-LaMoille scored the game-winning touchdown when Hunter Zimmerly gathered in a 1-yard touchdown pass from Hart with 5:45 left in the contest. The two-point run came up short.
The Clippers nearly doubled the total yardage on the Pirates, 279-143. Amboy-LaMoille picked up 255 of its yards on the ground, led by Rhine with 198 yards on 40 carries. Hart completed four of seven passes for 24 yards, with Zimmerly catching two passes and Rhine and Vaessen getting one apiece.
The Clippers (3-5 overall, 3-4 conference) will conclude the season when they travel to Forreston (7-1, 6-1) on Friday, Oct. 20.
