Carol R. Wendel


MENDOTA - Carol R. (Ossman) Wendel, 79, of Mendota passed away Dec. 8, 2019 at her home surrounded throughout the day with her family and friends.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Private graveside services will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota at a later date per her request.

Carol was born Nov. 21, 1940 in Mendota to Harry Sr. and Ella (Mueller) Ossman. She married Lee Wendel on Aug. 30, 1968 in Dixon and they resided on the Wendel farm ever since.

Survivors include her husband of Mendota; one brother, Harry (Cathy) Ossman, Jr.; four children, Robert Lewis, Kathy Zimmerly, Dawn Cores and Terry Wendel; two stepchildren, Susan (Hugh) McCoy and Connie (Jon) Yambert; and blessed with 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, John L. Zimmerly; and a step daughter, Sherry Zerbe.

Throughout her life Carol worked at the Mendota Trouser Factory and waitressed at the Couchman Inn, Sublette and Parkway Restaurant, Mendota for many years. Anybody who knew Carol knew the passion and love she had for all furry animals. A shelter was built at the farm so she could pursue her dream and for over 30 years, she ran the Sauk Valley Humane Society. She was named Woman of the Week in 1979 for the love and care of animals.
