Amboy hosts junior varsity tournament


AMBOY – Amboy High School hosted 12 other teams in the Amboy Junior Varsity Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 5.

Three Clipper wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes, led by Zack Cerreto with a fourth-place finish in the 126-pound category. Cerreto opened the tournament with a pin loss to Dixon’s Austin Pleskovitch at the 3:30 mark. Cerreto bounced back with a quick pin in just 26 seconds over Kel Lee of Mercer County before being pinned by Cody Lang of Genoa-Kingston in 3:37 of the third-place match.

Amboy’s Dylan Daniels claimed fifth-place honors in the 120-pound division. He won two of four matches, starting with a pin over Carter Donahue of Mercer County in 33 seconds and ending with another pin of Donahue in 29 seconds. In between, Daniels lost a 13-9 decision to Ethan Hanaman of Mendota and was pinned in 3:25 by Dixon’s Roman Kozak.

Bradley Gazza finished sixth at 138 pounds for the Clippers. His lone win in four matches was a pin over Dixon’s Jeremiah Joos in 2:36. Gazza was pinned twice by Alex Tatrae of Genoa-Kingston (5:07, 0:47) and also suffered a pin loss to Aleks Zydek of Dixon at the 41-second mark.

Tanner Schrock also competed for the Clippers but did not place in the 132-pound category.

Amboy finished 11thin the team standings with 27 points. Dixon won the tournament with 240 points, followed by Rock Falls (213), Erie-Prophetstown (92), Kewanee (90), Harvard (87), Genoa-Kingston (86), Mercer County (76), Sterling (74), Winnebago (68) and Mendota (35). Durand-Pecatonica (16) and West Carroll (12) finished behind the Clippers.
