SANDWICH – Two Amboy wrestlers extended their season by another week after the Clippers competed in the Sandwich Class 1A Regional on Feb. 5.

Dylan Daniels at 145 pounds finished second in his weight class and Levi Near took third place at 120 pounds to advance to the sectional.

Daniels posted a 2-1 record, pinning Antoine Gifford of Plano at 1:36 in the first round and getting another pin at the 2:36 mark over Ethan Waters of Aurora Central Catholic to place him in the championship match. Daniels had to settle for second place after he was pinned by Nolan Bobee of Sandwich in 1:31.

Near also won two of three matches. He started off with a loss by pin to Zeke Schroeder of Elgin Harvest Christian Academy at 5:28 before winning his next two matches in easy fashion. Near pinned Marcos Garcia of Plano in just 44 seconds and then needed just two minutes to finish off Josefth Hernandez of Sandwich to claim third place.

Near and Daniels will participate in the Princeton Sectional to be held Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12. The top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to the state tournament.

Amboy had four other wrestlers in the regional and all lost both of their matches. They were Josh McKendry (126), Dan Bevan (152), Lucas Blanton (160) and Kole Beckham (220).
