Girls Basketball: Amboy girls hoopers named to All-NUIC South Team

AMBOYAfter a 25-8 record and playing for a regional championship, four Amboy girls basketball players were named to the All-Northern Upstate Illini Conference South Team.

Senior Maeve Larson was named to the NUIC South First Team, senior Elly Jones and junior Addison Pertell were named to the second team, and junior Tyrah Vaessen was honorable mention.

“I feel great about Maeve Larson getting first team all-conference,” said Lady Clippers coach Mike McCracken. “She did a great job of rebounding for us this year. Maeve stepped up and averaged 10 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

“I thought Elly was one of the six best players in the conference because of her overall play. She averaged 8.9 points, 3.1 assists per game and was one of four players to get 2.5 to 3.8 assists per game in the conference. She did a great job of running our offense. I was disappointed she didn’t make the first team.”

Larson and Jones were the only seniors on the Amboy squad this season.

Heading into next year, McCracken will bring back talented players included Pertell and Vaessen who had All-NUIC South numbers and play on the court.

“Addison led us in scoring with 10.1 points per game. She can create her own shot as well as anyone in the conference. For that reason, I was disappointed she didn’t make the first team also,” McCracken said. “She also had a lot of steals and averaged 2.3 assists per game.

“Tyrah led us in assists and steals. She also was second in rebounds with 6.4 a game. She was a great leader and defensive player. I know she should have been second team.”

McCracken added he thought junior Emily Sachs should have been given recognition with an honorable mention nod, but he was overall happy the Lady Clippers were honored by being named to the NUIC South Team.
