Lady Clippers head to sectional meet

ROCK FALLS – The Amboy-LaMoille girls’ cross country team extended its season by at least another week after it participated in the Rock Falls Class 1A Regional on Oct. 21.

The Lady Clippers finished third in the team standings and will move on to the sectional. Rock Falls took the overall team title with 32 points, followed by Kewanee-Wethersfield (86) and Amboy-LaMoille (88). Other teams qualifying for the sectional include Bureau Valley (96), Sterling Newman (142), Orion (184), Princeton (214) and Ridgewood (214).

Margaret Vaessen was the first Lady Clipper runner to cross the finish line in 10th place overall with a time of 20:38.44. Next in was Cassidy Corcoran in 13th place at 20:59.57, followed by Kelynn Boyle in 14th at 21:01.58. Also competing for the Lady Clippers were Ashley Althaus (17th, 21:10.73), Kaitlyn Ortgiesen (35th, 22:17.96), Ally Gascoigne (46th, 23:39.04) and Macy Mershon (52nd, 24:05.58). Rock Falls had the top two runners in the meet and four of the top six.

Bailee Fortney was the overall champion with a time 18:16.44. In the boys’ competition, Amboy-LaMoille’s Thomas Stamberger qualified for the sectional after he was one of the top five runners to finish not on a qualifying team. Stamberger took eighth place overall with a time of 16:47.09.

Also running for the Clippers were Thomas Molln (28th, 18:01.54) and Calvin Deering (83rd, 21:00.28). Dawson Smith of Rock Falls captured the individual title with a time of 15:43.41. Sterling Newman claimed the team championship with 54 points.

Other teams moving on to the sectional include Rock Falls (75), Erie-Prophetstown (108), Bureau Valley (116), Galva (132), Rockridge (169) and Sherrard (186).

The sectional will be held in Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 28. The girls will race at 10 a.m. followed by the boys at 11 a.m.
