AMBOY — The Amboy Clippers’ baseball team saw its season come to a close after suffering a 9-1 setback to Forreston in the championship game of the Amboy Class 1A Regional on May 22.
Hunter Zimmerly was the losing pitcher for the Clippers.
In the semifinal game on May 18, Amboy battled Earlville/Leland. The Clippers came away with a 12-10 victory in a wild and exciting game. The bottom of the batting order did most of the damage for Amboy. Clayton Kemp and Alexis Gutierrez each had three hits and scored three times. Cain Powers was perfect at plate with three hits, including two doubles and two RBI. Zimmerly chipped in with two singles. Jordan Hochstatter and Mitchell McLaughlin each had doubles.
McLaughlin started the game on the mound and battled through 5 1/3 innings with five strike outs. The sixth inning started with the Clippers leading 9-3, but ended with Earlville/Leland having scored seven runs to take the lead. Both McLaughlin and his fellow sophomore teammate Zimmerly struggled to get outs in that inning.
The Clippers came right back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to take a 12-10 lead and held the Raiders scoreless in the seventh. Zimmerly got the win in relief.
Justin Hart and Brady Hulin played excellent defense at the catcher position and centerfield. Nick Schafer added an RBI single in the fourth to round out a total team victory.
