AMBOY — More than 75 Lions, spouses, and guests attended the Aug. 14 cook-out dinner meeting at Yogi Bear Campground to honor the 2017 Amboy Lions Club Scholarship winners and their parents. 

Amboy Lion President Roger Wittenauer led the group in the pledge of allegiance and Lion Jim Braida offered the prayer before the meal. After the meal, the five scholarship winners, Hannah Grady, Kylie Highbarger, Jordan Hochstatter, Brady Hulin, and Delaney Wilhelm were honored.  Each winner was asked to introduce their parents and to give a short summary of their career goals and the school they will be attending this fall. The community can be very proud of the quality of students that Amboy High School graduates each year.

Wittenauer then gave a summary of some of the club’s projects and activities over the past year.

In other club news, members are supplying the labor for the refurbishing of a privacy fence at the Maple Crossing Nursing Home in Amboy. Once completed, the dementia residents will have a safe area in which to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The club is busy making the final preparations for the Amboy Depot Days Parade to be held on Aug. 26. This year’s theme for the parade is “Honoring our Local Fire Departments.” 

The club is also finalizing details for the upcoming drawdown. The Amboy Lions Club Drawdown will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Community Center. Tickets are still available. Contact a Lion member if interested in attending. This is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.  Proceeds raised helps support many community projects including the scholarship program, eye and hearing exams for the under-privileged in the area, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Depot Days Parade.

The club is looking into doing repairs on the community tennis courts and fencing at the high school and the possible development of pickle ball courts.
