LEE COUNTY —  The Lee County Committee representing the Quad Cities Honor Flight has had a very busy winter. On Dec. 11, 2019, several committee members traveled to the Quad Cities to present a $50,000 check to the Quad Cities Honor Flight Hub to help secure the Oct. 29, 2020, flight for Lee County area veterans. The total cost for the Honor Flight is approximately $80,000. 

On Jan. 25, the group had a very good turnout for their Baked Potato and Soup Supper held at the Dixon VFW.  All proceeds from this event are being used to put area veterans on the Flight.  On Feb. 5 committee members took time from their busy schedules and met at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dixon to help assemble and pack ‘Buddy Bags’ for area students.  Throughout the last few months several committee members have done Honor Flight presentations and handed out applications at various area organizations including the American Legion in Franklin Grove and the Legion in Ladd, the Dixon Lion Lionesses Club, and at a joint meeting of the Dixon Evening and Polo Lions Clubs.  

The Committee has also been busy signing up veterans, (both men and women) and guardians for the approximately 25 remaining seats on the upcoming Oct. 29 flight. On Oct. 1, 2020, any person flying in the Unites States will need a Real ID license or a passport. The Committee will hold an informational meeting this spring to explain how to obtain a Real ID for any veteran or guardian who will be going on the Oct. 29 flight. This meeting will be open to the public and to all veterans wanting information about obtaining a Real ID.

On April 19 the Committee will again hold their Annual Spring Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Dixon VFW.  On June 13 they will have a Lunch Cookout at Oliver’s in Dixon.  All proceeds from these events will go toward offsetting the costs of the upcoming October Honor Flight.  

Members of the Committee are available to give Honor Flight presentations to area clubs and/or businesses. For more information about the Honor Flight or to set up dates and times for a presentation, please contact Tom Bushman c/o the Dixon VFW.

The mission of the Honor Flight Organization is to send war veterans, (both men and women) as an organized group to Washington DC to visit their war memorials. This one day event on a chartered flight to Washington DC is free to all eligible veterans. 

The Committee encourages all veterans who served during WWII, the Korean War or the Vietnam war, to take advantage of this incredible day.
