SUBLETTE — The Village of Sublette board voted Monday night to prohibit the sale of recreational marijuana in the village limits.

The board met for their monthly meeting on Monday night in the Ellice Dinges Center. All board members were present except for Sublette Village Trustee Jeff Myers. 

Sublette Village Attorney Dana Considine prepared an ordinance for the village prohibiting the sale of recreational marijuana. Considine told the board that they cannot prohibit the sale of medicinal marijuana. She also told the board that if future boards wanted to reverse the ordinance, they had the option to do so. The ordinance was approved 5-0.

Informational Meeting

Acting Sublette Village President John Stenzel said he has been approached by some organizations about having a public information event. He said KSB Hospital is interested in presenting on their new program KSB Care Anyware. He said ComEd and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department would talk about scams going on. He said Republic Services would be interested in talking about the correct way to recycle. Don Dinges, economic development for the village, said the Illinois I-Cash program expressed interest too.

Considine said title company email scams are a big thing right now, and she may be able to get someone from her office to come to the event to speak on it. 

Sublette Village Trustee Julie Kessel said the village should have booths set up where the speakers could address concerns from the residents individually. 

Board members will look into options for the future event.

In other board news:

• The village’s water, garbage and drainage committee met with a representative from Republic Services and discussed options available to the village at the end of February. Stenzel read the minutes from that committee meeting into the public record. 

He said that Option 1 was a three year contract extension with a monthly increase. Option 2 saw a 7 year contract extension with set pricing over different time frames. Stenzel said the representative recommended the residents opt for the 95 gallon totes or carts over the 65 gallon container. 

Stenzel said the rep also recommends all residents have their garbage set out by 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. Stenzel said the rep also said that if a resident has more than 3 30-gallon containers, the resident needs to call Republic to pay for the extra pick-up and to arrange for the pick-up.

At the end of the meeting under new business, Considine said she read over the village’s current garbage contract that was made with Illinois Valley Waste before they were purchased by Republic Service, and that the village can only extend their contract by 5 years. Stenzel said he would contact Republic about a 5-year extension option.
