AMBOY — On July 26, the Amboy Lions Club honored the 2021 Scholarship recipients and one of their own at the recognition dinner held at the Amboy Community Center with nearly 70 members and guests present.

The Melvin Jones Award was presented to Lion Patti Ohlendorf. This award takes its name from the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, and is the Club’s highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual’s dedication to humanitarian service. Lion Ohlendorf recently donated a kidney to an individual from southern Illinois to allow him to continue his life with his wife and family. Patti is the perfect example of what this award is all about.  Prior to the presentation of this award, a guest speaker from OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, spoke to the members and guests about live organ donations.

Lion Jim Travi introduced the five Lions Club Scholarship recipients and their parents from the AHS 2021 Senior Class. Recipients are: Brianna Blaine, Madelyn McLaughlin, Mallory Powers, Nicholas Tarr, and Brooklyn Whelchel. Each recipient was asked to introduce themselves, their parents, and to give a short summary of their college and career goals. Amboy High School certainly can be proud of the quality of students that they are graduating.

The Club announced the Grand Marshals of the upcoming Depot Days Parade to be held on Aug. 28.  Parade marshals will be the original Depot Days Car Show Committee from 30 years ago. The Club, under the leadership of Lion President David Kemp, is finalizing plans for the 2021 Depot Day Parade. If anyone still wants to have an entry in the parade, please go to the Amboy Lions Club website or Face book page to sign up. Registration forms are also available at City Hall during regular business hours.

In other news, the Club is working on the annual Draw Down to be held on Sept. 11. This year’s Draw Down will be “back to normal” with dinner for two and the drawdown to follow. Tickets are $60 and are now available for purchase. Please contact a Lion member if interested.
