DIXON — Lawrence Allen “Larry” “Uncle Lar” “Grampy” Lappin, 68, of Dixon, died Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at his home surrounded by his wife and kids. He was a truck driver for Raynor Manufacturing in Dixon for 34 years, prior to his retirement in 2010.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m., until time of funeral services at 1:30 p.m., on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon, with Rev. Ken Lawson, Chaplain with Unity Hospice, officiating. Burial with full military graveside services provided by the combined veteran organizations will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon, immediately following the funeral service.
Larry was born April 28, 1949, in Marengo, the son of Leverett and Maxine (Yerke) Lappin. He married Patty “Jill” Stegmaier on Feb. 7, 1976, in Milledgeville. Larry served in the United States Army from 1968 – 1970, during the Vietnam War serving with the 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. Larry was awarded three Bronze Stars for his actions during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #12 in Dixon and was the founder of Rock River Valley Chapter VietNow in Dixon. Larry loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed old hot rod cars, cruising with his best bud Zeus (his Goldendoodle), fishing, and gardening.
Larry is survived by his wife, Jill Lappin; three sons, Zeb (Kami) Lappin, Luke (Andrea) Lappin, Noah (Zehra) Lappin, all of Dixon; two brothers, Dennis (Karen) Lappin, of Poplar Grove; Billy Lappin, of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Mary Rodarte, of Rockford; and one sister-in-law, Caryl Lappin, of Harmon; four grandchildren with another on the way (Levi Allen), Layni, Presley, Hudson, and Laken Lappin; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as many close friends. The Lappin family would like to thank everyone for the love and support over the past three months from all their friends especially Nurse Trish Shuck, who took the time out of her personal life to care for Larry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Richie Lappin.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Disabled Veterans of America.
