Lady Clippers to compete at 2019 state meet

ERIE – The Amboy-LaMoille girls’ track team will have plenty of representation in the state meet after the Lady Clippers participated in the Erie Class 1A Sectional on May 9.

The Lady Clippers qualified for state in a whopping six events. Three of A-L’s relay teams earned state bids, while three individuals will also be heading south this weekend.

Emma Lundquist was the top finisher on the day for the Lady Clippers as she raced to the tape in first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.37.

Ashley Althaus qualified in the 400-meter dash. Despite finishing in third place, Althaus managed to complete the race in 1:01.73, which was under the state qualifying standard of 1:02.07. The first- and second-place finishers in each event automatically qualify for state.

The other individual state qualifier was Kylee Brown in the long jump with a distance of 16-5. While she placed seventh in the sectional, her measurement was one inch farther than the state qualifying mark of 16-4. A total of eight long jumpers in the Erie Sectional qualified for state.

Amboy-LaMoille’s top finishing relay team was the 4x400-meter squad, which took second place with a time of 4:13.74 and is headed to state. Participants were Sidney Corcoran, Brooklyn Whelchel, Lundquist and Ashley Althaus. At the conclusion of all the sectionals in the state, the Lady Clippers have the fifth-best time heading into the state meet.

The 4x100-meter relay squad will be representing the team in the state meet. The foursome of Corcoran, Whelchel, Brown and Lundquist took fourth place with a time of 51.14. The state qualifying mark is 51.92.

The 4x200-meter relay team also qualified for state after finishing in fifth place, but recording a time of 1:49.31 compared to the state qualifying standard of 1:51.15. Making up the squad were Whelchel, Corcoran, Lundquist and Brown.

Margaret Vaessen narrowly missed a trip to state in the 800-meter run after finishing third with a time of 2:29.20.

The Lady Clippers scored 40 points and placed seventh in the team standings. Rock Island Alleman took top honors with 98.5 points.

The IHSA Class 1A State Track Meet will be held May 16-18 at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
