Clippers sandwich wins around loss to talented Milledgeville squad

AMBOY — The Amboy varsity boys’ basketball team sandwiched a pair of wins around a loss to a talented Milledgeville squad.

The Clippers turned back Ashton-Franklin Center for the second time this season, 48-41, on Feb. 12 at Ashton.

Amboy trailed at the conclusion of the first three quarters, including 25-15 at halftime. The Clippers managed to trim five points off of their deficit in the third quarter, and then they exploded for 20 points in the fourth frame and held AFC to just eight to complete the comeback victory.

Connor Simpson led a balanced Amboy scoring attach with 13 points. Tucker Lindenmeyer was next with nine points and Ian Eller contributed eight tallies.

Amboy stayed close to Milledgeville for one quarter before the Missiles pulled away for a 59-27 triumph over the Clippers on Feb. 18 at Milledgeville.

The Missiles held an 11-7 lead after the first quarter, but then poured it on in the second period and took a 30-13 advantage to the locker room. The home team led 46-23 with three quarters in the books.

Preston Henkel and Andruw Jones dropped in six and four points, respectively, for Amboy.

The Clippers got back on the winning track with a 49-37 decision over Kirkland Hiawatha on Feb. 20 at the AHS gym.

Amboy benefited from a fast start and opened a double-digit lead after one, 14-4. Hiawatha cut into the Clipper lead by three points at the break (27-20), but Amboy stretched the margin back to double figures in the second half.

Henkel had the hot hand for the Clippers with 17 points. He connected on a pair of shots from three-point range. Simpson was next on the scoring chart with eight tallies, while Eller chipped in with seven markers.
