Clippers rout Durand-Pecatonica

AMBOY — Great pitching and plenty of timely hitting propelled Amboy to a 10-0 rout of Durand-Pecatonica in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference varsity baseball action on April 16 at City Park.

Hunter Zimmerly threw a complete-game three-hit shutout in leading the Clippers to the victory. He was in total command, striking out 12 and walking two over six innings. The game was called because of the 10-run rule.

Zimmerly also did plenty of damage with his bat. The senior pounded out three singles and had four runs batted in. Clayton Kemp also had a great day at the dish with three singles, a double and two RBI. Picking up two hits apiece were Lane Boehle (single, double) and Mitchell McLaughlin (two singles). Andrew Thier added a single and two runs batted in.

The Clippers defeated Durand-Pecatonica for the second time in two days, 9-3, on April 18 at Du-Pec.

Amboy scored five of its runs in the final two frames to pull away for the conference win.

The weather was chilly but the Clippers’ bats were on fire as they pounded out 15 hits. McLaughlin led the attack with two singles and two doubles. Stroking two hits each were Kemp (single, double), Zimmerly (two singles), Maverick Lindenmeyer (two singles) and Logan Whelchel (two singles). Boehle added a double.

McLaughlin worked 6 2/3 strong innings on the hill to get the triumph. He gave up seven hits, three runs, walked two and struck out nine. Whelchel recorded the final out.

The Clippers improved to 7-6 overall and 6-1 in league play.
