Clippers getting in as many matches as possible before playoffs

The IHSA Class 1A Sandwich Regional begins for Amboy and the other 10 competing teams on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Before the Clippers see how far they can get in the postseason, they’re stacking the duals and tournaments in preparation.

Amboy defeated Durand 39-6 on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Durand, lost to Dixon 81-0 on Thursday, Jan. 25, and competed in the freshman and sophomore 2024 Oregon/KSB Wresting Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 27 where freshmen Caiden Heath (138 pounds) and Evan Flanagan (215) both won their brackets.

In Durand, sophomore Landon Blanton won by a 7-2 decision at 120, 126-pound sophomore Chase Montavon defeated Evie Anderson via pin fall in 1:13, and Heath pinned Mark Nevdal in 3:44.

Earning forfeit points were freshman Ty Florschuetz (106), freshman Chase Huggins (113), freshman Jose Lopez (144), and senior Lucas Blanton (175).

The Clippers ran into the Dukes and were not able to secure points. Lucas Blanton grappled valiantly at 175 pounds but lost via a 10-4 decision.

Amboy brought five wrestlers to the underclassmen tournament in Oregon and three of them earned a spot on the podium.

Heath (19-8) won the 138-pound bracket by securing a 21-5 technical fall victory in the first round, a pin fall win in the quarterfinal in 1:55, a fall in 1:52 in the semifinal, and won the championship match by a 4-2 decision.

At 215 pounds, Flanagan (21-13) took home the bracket with a bye in the first round, a pinfall victory at 1:40 in the quarterfinal, a 1:15 pinfall in the semifinal, and a pin at 4:54 in the championship.

Florschuetz (17-14) finished fourth at 106, Chase Huggins competed at 113, and sophomore Landon Roath wrested at 215.
