Clippers defeat Kirkland at AFC Tourney


ASHTON – The Amboy Clippers defeated Kirkland Hiawatha, 58-53, in the Ashton-Franklin Center Turkey Tournament on Nov. 21.

The Clippers fell behind 13-9 after the first eight-minute session, but they heated up in the second period and forged in front, 31-28, at intermission. Amboy started to pull away in the third frame and took a 43-34 lead to the fourth.

Hunter Zimmerly paced three Amboy players in double figures with 21 points. He connected on two field goals from three-point land. Logan Whelchel pumped in three treys on his way to 14 points, while Mitchell McLaughlin also contributed 14 tallies.


A speedy Polo team raced past the Clippers, 64-22, on Nov. 23 at the AFC Tournament.

Amboy held a 5-4 lead early in the contest, but Polo scored the final 14 points of the first quarter to lead, 18-5.

McLaughlin topped Amboy scorers with 11 points.


LaMoille-Ohio got the better of the Clippers, 61-54, in the final game of the AFC Tournament on Nov. 24.

Amboy jumped out to a 14-10 lead at the conclusion of the first frame, but LaMoille-Ohio dumped in 18 second-quarter points compared to just eight for the Clippers. Amboy only trailed by two (35-33) with three quarters in the books, but a 26-point fourth-quarter outburst by the Lions finished off the Clippers.

Zimmerly and McLaughlin poured in 18 points apiece to lead the Clippers, while Preston Henkel and Maverick Lindenmeyer each supplied eight tallies. Marcus Winn fired in 18 points to lead the Lions, one of four players in double digits. Brady Becker was next with 14 points, followed by Hunter Walzer with 12 and Casen Cherry with 11.
