AMBOY – The Amboy High School cross country teams concluded the 2020 regular season with first-place finishes in a home meet on Oct. 15 at Shady Oaks.
The boys had 29 points and rolled over Polo (46) and Galena (48). Freeport Aquin did not have a full squad of runners to compete.
AHS’s Brock Loftus had another impressive run by beating the rest of the field by almost a minute with a time of 16:11.
Teammate Kyler McNinch cruised through the chute in third place with a clocking of 17:11, while Andruw Jones (7th, 18:19) and Wyatt Lundquist (8th, 18:23) were also in the top 10.
Rounding out the Clipper lineup were Garrett Pertell in 13th place at 19:57 and Calvin Deering in 14th place at 20:22.
“The boys finished 10-1 on the season and didn’t lose to a 1A team all year,” noted coach Mike Robinson. “To say that is a feat is an understatement considering we ran about half the meets missing at least three members of the team. I’m really proud of all the work they have put in and everything they have accomplished.”
The Lady Clippers made it a clean sweep for Amboy by beating Freeport Aquin, 23-32, neither Polo or Galena had a full squad of runners to compete.
Lauren Althaus led the way for the Lady Clippers with a first-place finish in a time of 21:01. Next in for Amboy was Madelyn McLaughlin in fourth place at 22:01, followed by Brittney Mundell in seventh with a clocking of 22:55. Brooklyn Whelchel (10th, 24:27) and Bailey Crouch (11th, 24:33) also competed.
“It was a great way to end the regular season for the girls,” said Robinson. “They went 3-0 at home this year, getting better each time they ran the course.”
The AHS girls’ and boys’ teams will race again in the Peru St. Bede Regional on Saturday, Oct. 24. Race times are 9 a.m. for the girls and noon for the boys.
