DURAND – The Amboy Lady Clippers made their number one seed hold up in convincing fashion as they posted two shutout victories on their way to the championship of the Durand Class 1A Girls’ Regional Softball Tournament.

Amboy opened the tournament with a 12-0 triumph over Lake Forest (Woodlands Academy) on May 16. The game was halted after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Lady Clippers scored in every inning. They led 1-0 after the first frame, then put five runs on the board in the second, two in the third and four more in the fourth.

Amboy’s bats were on fire. Picking up two hits apiece were Delaney Wilhelm (single, double), Kylie Highbarger (two singles) and Emma Lindenmeyer (two singles, one RBI). Shannon Lytle smacked a home run and drove in a pair of runs, while Haley Varga and Hallie Nauman each singled and had two RBI.

Starting pitcher Karlee Doege was no match for Woodlands Academy as she allowed just two hits and struck out 11. She did not issue a walk.

The Lady Clippers once again put together stellar pitching to go along with excellent hitting in defeating Durand, 6-0, in the regional title game on May 18.

Doege was masterful in the circle, shutting down the Durand offense on just one hits. The senior struck out nine and walked one.

Doege got plenty of support from her offense, especially from Nauman, who walloped two home runs and drove in three runs. Wilhelm added two singles and drove in one run, while Lytle doubled and had one RBI.

Amboy improved its record to 22-3 and was scheduled to meet Pearl City in the first round of the Dakota Sectional on Tuesday. The sectional championship game is Friday, May 26 at 4:30 p.m.

The winner of the Dakota Sectional will advance to the Sterling Supersectional to face the champion of the Glasford (Illini Bluffs) Sectional on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m.
