The base of the flooring at Amboy Junior High is plywood fastened wooden joists. Floor tiles, which contain asbestos, were then bonded to the plywood with an adhesive that contains asbestos. If the floor tiles need to be replaced, so too does the adhesive. However, removing the adhesive requires a solvent that would soak into the plywood base. Therefore, any abatement of the asbestos floor tile at the junior high school requires the removal of and replacement of tile, adhesive and plywood. Last cost estimate (2017): $1,410,000.
