AMBOY — Janet Doris Kant, 76, of Amboy, went to be with our Lord Monday, Aug. 28, 2017 at Serenity Hospice Home in Oregon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, in the Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy with the Rev. Frank Brozenec officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Repose Cemetery in Amboy. Visitation will be held from 5 – 8 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 1, in the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon and East Grove Union Church.

She was born July 6, 1941, in Paw Paw, the daughter of Samual and Dorothy (Volkert) Northcutt. She attended Mendota High School then got married and started a family. As a young mother of five children and a homemaker, she also went to work at Hart Carter and later Wayside Press. After getting a certificate in food sanitation, she studied and received her degree in Dietary Management from Sauk Valley College.

It was at the Amboy Rehabilitation and Nursing Center that she dedicated 23 years of her life working as their Dietary Manager. She later worked four years managing the kitchen at the Lee County Nursing Home in Dixon prior to her retirement. Janet very much enjoyed working with the elderly residents and spending time with them reminiscing.

On March 27, 1999, Janet was married to Walter Kant with whom she helped in caring for his children and raising hogs on his farm.

She was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Brooklyn.

The time Janet spent gardening, cooking and catering, cleaning her home, taking care of her horses, and mowing her lawn gave her a great deal of satisfaction.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; and her beautiful daughter, Cindy in 1986, at the heartbreaking age of 21.

She is survived by her husband, Walter of Amboy; three sons, Brian (Susan) Mellott, of Mesa, Ariz., Mark (Janet) Mellott, of Buchanan, Tenn., and Gary Mellott, of Amboy; one daughter, Sherrie (Carl) Henrichs, of Amboy; two step sons, Donald (Terri) Kant and Joshua (Kelsey) Kant, both of Amboy;  two step daughters, Tabatha (Kyle) Near, of Lee Center and Barbara Kant, of Dixon; eight grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jerry (Connie) Northcutt, of Mendota;  her previous daughter-in-law, Sandy Mellott, of Franklin Grove;  her children's father, Dale Mellott, of LaSalle.
