LEE COUNTY — Lee County Sheriff John Simonton has announced that the construction bids for the new Law Enforcement Center were received and reviewed by Ringland-Johnson, the Construction Manager for the project. During this past week, the county board chairman and Simonton reviewed the bid awards with each committee. The chairman subsequently signed a “Notice to Proceed” for the project, accepting the bids.
Earlier this year, the Lee County Board set a cap for the project at $18.5 million. The construction bids received totaled $16,830,347. This is nearly $1.7 million under the cap and nearly $1.2 million under the estimated goal set by Ringland-Johnson of $17,959,000.
“All in all, this is great news for the county,” Simonton said.
The construction schedule has not changed. Some excavating work is already starting, with a formal groundbreaking ceremony set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the new site – 240 Progress Drive, Dixon.
“The Notice to Proceed was essential, as this begins the mobilization process for the successful bidders, as well as setting the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for this project,” Simonton said. “The only additional costs left, at this point, are expenses related to IT networking, computers, phones, furniture, etc. (FFE line item). This is estimated to be at a cost of approximately $300,000.”
Final figures should be set in the next month or so.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the public for their understanding and trust in us, through the passage of the referendum,” Simonton said. “This project could not have been possible without their assistance. This savings is indicative of the extremely hard work we have all put into this project – from the Planning and Finance Ad-Hoc committees, to the nucleus of Sheriff’s Department command personnel and that of our Construction Manager Ringland-Johnson. The communication and coordination to this point has been nothing short of amazing. I, along with everyone else in Lee County, are looking forward to the groundbreaking ceremony and construction to begin.”
The estimated date of completion is November 2019.
