There was plenty of rest for the Amboy wrestling team as they hadn’t taken the mat since December 20.

Rust scratched off quick as the varsity team split a triangular Tuesday, Jan. 2 in Sandwich as the Clippers beat Genoa-Kingston but lost to Sandwich.

In a 39-30 victory over the Cogs, 106-pound freshman Ty Florschuetz earned a 4-0 decision over Caleb Lancaste, freshman Chase Huggins recorded a pinfall in 3:00 at 120 pounds, freshman Caiden Heath pinned Luckas Lancaste in 1:45 at 138 pounds, 144-pound freshman Jose Lopez secured a pin in 1:20, senior Lucas Blanton pinned 175-pound Xander Gleissner in 3:50, and 215-pound freshman Evan Flanagan earned a pin fall over Azuriah Alrect in 3:00.

Forfeit-win points were earned by Amboy 126-pound sophomore Landon Blanton.

In a 48-17 loss to the Bulldogs, Amboy points came from Landon Blanton with a 19-3 technical fall at 126, Lucas Blanton with a fall in 2:35 over Kai Kern at 190, and Flanagan with a fall in 2:00 at 215.

The Clippers junior varsity team hosted an 18-team tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Amboy finished fourth with six podium placers out of seven participants.

Florschuetz was the champion and 106, Lopez stood atop of the 144-pound podium, and Flanagan won the 215-pound bracket.

Heath finished second at 138, Huggins was fourth at 113, and Montavon took fourth at 126.
