Softball: Lady Clippers beat AFC twice

AMBOY Pitching and swinging were working int the Amboy softball team’s favor against Ashton-Franklin Center in their Northwest Upstate Illini Conference battles Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1.

In the first meeting in Amboy, the Lady Clippers won 9-1.

The win in the circle was accredited to sophomore Ellie Mclaughlin who struck out nine, walked two and gave up six hits.

On the plate, junior Tyrah Vaessen was 2-of-4 with a single, a double, and three RBI, sophomore Kiera Karlson was 3-of-4 with a triple, a double, a single, and three RBI, sophomore Peyton Payne was 2-of-3 with two singles, and Mclaughlin, senior Addison Shaw, junior Haleigh Stenzel, and sophomore Brittlyn Whitman each tallied a single.

The next day, Amboy and AFC met on the field in Ashton where the Lady Clippers triumphed 6-2.

Sophomore Alyvia Whelchel was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts, three walks and allowing six hits.

Vaessen was 2-4 with the bat hitting two singles, Mclaughlin was 2-of-4 with two singles and two RBI, and Shaw was 2-of-3 with a double and a single.

Also this week, Monday, May 6, Amboy traveled to Sterling to play Newman Central Catholic.

The Lady Clippers fell 12-1 although Payne hit a double and Karlson and Stenzel recorded singles. Whelchel was the losing pitcher.

The Amboy softball team is now 10-8, 7-3 NUIC.
