AMBOY — Things were buzzing in the month of March at Amboy Jr. High School. The AJHS Jr. Beta Club is a nationally recognized club that focuses on achievement, character, leadership and service. AJHS Jr. Beta Club is 27 members strong this year. The club’s mission statement is, "To promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students.”
On Feb. 27-28, the club attended the IL State Junior Beta Convention in Springfield. This convention gives students the opportunity to strengthen their academic and leadership skills, showcase their talents and artistic abilities, and interact with Junior Betas from all over Illinois. Activities range from academic contests to quiz bowls to talent competitions. The club members proudly brought home a third place plaque in Tower of Power and a second place plaque for Calisthenics of the Mind.
The first week in March, our school celebrated National Jr. Beta week. This week after convention is a time to spread the buzz about their club. Throughout the week, students wanted to create a presence for their club in the junior high school. Members created placemats that highlighted their experience at the state convention, which they displayed throughout the school.
They also created "Beta Bucks" (Betas Equipped To Assist). These paper printed bucks were distributed to the teachers and staff to call on the Beta Club to help with anything from classroom chores to tutoring fellow students at a teacher's request. Beta Bucks have become a very popular items and have are great tool for students to earn their required yearly service hours. Members also set up a table during lunch to promote a positive buzz about their club through some informal question and answer time with the student body, highlighting the benefits of being a Beta member and promoting the growth of their club.
Finally, Beta members rounded out the week by hosting a Beta Bagel Breakfast in the teacher’s lounge to show their appreciation for staff and teachers. National Beta week is a time to spread the club motto, "let us lead, by serving others."
Please keep the AJHS Jr. Beta Club in mind when looking for a group to volunteer and/or serve, they are eager and willing to make a mark in their school and community. The club is sponsored by Mrs.Tina Lindenmeyer and Mrs. Kelly Foster.
