AMBOY — Dixon’s Jack Mabley Center residents and their families were treated to a pancake and sausage breakfast on April 15. The event was led by the Amboy Lions along with the Dixon Evening Lions, the Dixon Noon Lions, the Dixon Lioness Lions, the Ashton Lions, and the Amboy Leo Club. All of the clubs worked together to put on a very successful and well attended event.
In other club news, Rose Day held on March 24 was successful thanks to the local community support. The club again sold 700 dozen roses this year. Profits from the sale will help fund the upcoming scholarships that will be announced at the AHS Honors Night in May. Mother Nature cooperated by providing sunshine for the annual Cliff Walter Easter Egg Hunt on March 31. There were over 150 participants who went home with eggs, candy, and prizes. Some prizes were donated by the Dixon Wal-Mart, and the Dixon Great Clips. The eggs were donated by the Amboy Food and Liquor Store. The club picked up the cost of the candy and other prizes and the Amboy Leo members helped pack the candy bags. Everyone enjoyed a good time.
The club sent four delegates to the 60th Annual 1D Convention in Rockford on April 7.
The convention was well attended by Lions Clubs from all over northern Illinois. Session topics included the Northern Illinois Diabetes Coalition, Restoring Hope Transplant House, and a special address by Brian Sheehan, past International Lions Director on leadership. Amboy Lion member Edith Pfeiffer was awarded the International President’s Distinguished Leadership Medal.
The Amboy Lions recently purchased two Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) units and donated one to each community center in Amboy and Sublette.
Along with the donation the club sponsored a training class open to the public on how to use the AED units.
The Lee Center Community Church recently donated Easter lilies and tulips to decorate the Cliff Walter Memorial in the Amboy City Park. Amboy Lion President Roger Wittenauer and Sandy Wittenauer planted the flowers.
The recently installed Drop Box for glasses, Christmas lights, and used ink cartridges in front of the Amboy Food and Liquor Store has been a big success. In the first few weeks after installation, the club was able to collect three full bags of items to be recycled.
Plans are underway for the Depot Days Parade in August, the Lions Club Draw Down in September, and for the Health Fair on Oct. 20 at the Amboy Community Center.
