Softball: Lady Clippers pick up first two wins of the season against conference rival AFC

AMBOY – The only sweeter thing than winning your first two games of the season is when they’re both against a Northwest Upstate Illini
Conference South Division rival.

The Amboy softball team defeated Ashton-Franklin Center, 15-6, on Tuesday, April 8 and 23-19 on Thursday, April 10.

The Lady Clippers (3-7) ended the week with an 18-5 loss to non-conference opponent Durand on Saturday, April 12.

In the first meeting with AFC, freshman Tinley Whitney earned the win in the circle with 13 strikeouts, 11 walks, and two hits allowed.

At the plate, junior Kiera Karlson was 4-of-5 with four singles and three RBI, sophomore Lili Leffelman was 3-of-5 with a single, a double, a triple and five RBI, senior Tyrah Vaessen was 3-of-4 with a RBI, and freshman Gabby Miller was 2-of-5 with a single, a double, and an RBI.

In the second victory over AFC, junior Alyvia Whelchel tallied the win in the circle with two strikeouts, six walks, and 11 allowed hits.

The Lady Clipper bats continued to hit the ball hard as Vaessen was 6-of-6 with three doubles, three singles and four RBI, sophomore Leighton Gulley was 4-of—6 with three singles and a double, and junior Peyton Payne was 4-of-5 with a home run, two singles, a double, and five RBI.

Vaessen was 3-of-4 with a triple, a double, and a single in the loss to Durand.
