Shaw competes at state wrestling meet


AMBOY — Avery Shaw, a junior at Amboy High School, pictured left, placed fourth in the 195 pound weight class, which advanced him to the state wrestling meet which began on Feb. 14 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Shaw faced Elliott Fox of Pittsfield, a senior, who has a record of 31-11, in the first round of the state meet on Thursday. Shaw lost the first match by decision 8-4 and headed to the consolation bracket where he will face Charlie Waldusky, a senior, from Lisle who has a record of 29-9.

Shaw advanced to state after finishing fourth in the Byron Class 1A Sectional on Feb. 9.

Shaw's teammates Zach Wicaryus and Dorian Barlow, who had advanced to the sectional round, did not place.

Shaw had a busy day, wrestling in five matches and winning three. He scored a pair of pin wins and a 5-1 decision.

Wicaryus was beaten in his only two matches at 132 pounds, while Barlow won one of three matches in the 182-pound division.
