Glenda M. Fleming


STERLING — Glenda M. Fleming, 68, of Sterling, formerly of Amboy, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at Rock River Hospice Home. She was born Nov. 14, 1949, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of James and Wilma (Goeke) Curtin.

She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in education with an emphasis in Special Education. In her teaching career, she worked as a substitute teacher, helped with the preschool in Amboy, and then was a kindergarten teacher in Paw Paw. She subsequently taught Special Education in Franklin Grove. Along with her husband, she owned the Amboy Pharmacy, where she spent over 30 years as a fixture in the community.

Glenda was a past president of the Amboy Chamber of Commerce, helped with the Christmas Walk, where she was known for her vegetable pizza, and was a member of the Amboy Women's Club.

Glenda enjoyed crossword puzzles, walking, clogging, spending time with her family, and searching out collectibles.

She married Stephen J. Fleming in Iowa City, Iowa, June 5, 1971, who preceded her in death March 31, 2004. Glenda was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Connie Fisher;  and one brother, Kent Curtin.

Survivors include her four children: Christopher (Tess) Fleming, of Dixon, Callie (Patrick) Bodmer, of Amboy, James (Jane) Fleming, of Charleston, S.C., and Tiffany (Will) Lee, of Sterling; 10 grandchildren: Daxton, Knox, Marlo, Haven, Mallory, Leah, Benjamin, Makenzie, J. Oliver, and Calvin; one brother, Greg (Madeline) Curtin, of Prophetstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, in St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Colin Easton officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 2, in the Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy.
