Girls Basketball: Three teams finish 2-1 at Amboy Girls Holiday Tournament

AMBOY – Although the Amboy girls basketball tournament had a 2-1 record during the Amboy Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-28, so did two other teams, Marquette and Newman.

“The tiebreaker is complicated. The bottom line was in the Marquette-Newma game, the officials called 25 fouls on Newman,” said Amboy coach Mike McCracken. “Marquette was able to beat Newman. The officials only had called seven fouls on Newman with about 2 ½ minutes left in the game. They called three more when it didn’t matter.

“Newman presses and traps I the half court. So, it was rough, and we didn’t handle it well. We were outplayed.”

With that said, Marquette won the tournament with a loss to Amboy, while Newman had a loss to Marquette, and Amboy a loss to Newman. Mendota, the fourth and final team in the tournament, finished 0-3.

Amboy defeated Mendota 53-34 during Day 1 of the tournament as junior Jillian Anderson had a game high 13 points, senior Addison Pertell and junior Bella Yanos each had 10, and senior Emily Sachs added nine and grabbed in 10 rebounds. Senior Tyrah Vaessen led the team in rebounds (12) and assists (four) to go with seven points.

During the second day of the tournament, Amboy defeated Marquette 49-41.

Vaessen made her presence felt once again with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Yanos and Anderson each grabbed 10 rebounds, while Yanos scored nine points and Anderson tallied seven.

In the Lady Clippers lone loss of the tournament, they were outscored 36-19 by Newman, which Amboy beat for the tournament championship last December.

Vaessen scored eight points and Pertell added six.

The Amboy Girls Basketball All-Tournament Team included Amboy’s Vaessen and Anderson, Mendota’s Ava Eddy, Marquette’s Hunter Hopkins and Kaitlyn Davis, and Newman’s Lucy Oetting and Gisselle Martin.

Amboy, which beat Hinckley-Big Rock 43-27, Ashton-Franklin Center 39-29, and Rock Falls 52-28 the week before the tournament, is now 9-6 on the year.
