AMBOY – The Amboy girls basketball team has been on a roll.
After falling to Newman in their last game of the Amboy Christmas Tournament, the Lady Clippers went on an eight-game winning streak before falling to Eastland.
Amboy defeated Mendota (covered in the Jan. 22 edition of The Amboy News), Somonauk 41-39 on January 8, Fulton 47-23 on January 10, Dakota 40-33 on January 11 at the Eastland Shootout, Milledgeville 54-15 on January 14, Morrison 42-13 on Thursday, Jan. 16, Pearl City 44-19 on Saturday, Jan. 18, and Polo 38-35 on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The Lady Clippers are now 17-7 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference East Division after falling to Eastland, 26-18, on Friday, Jan. 24.
Against Somonauk, senior Addison Pertell led the team scoring with 13 points, while senior Tyrah Vaessen and junior Jillian Anderson scored eight points apiece. Junior Bella Yanos pulled down 10 rebounds and Anderson had eight.
Pertell and fellow senior Emily Sachs (seven rebounds, three assists) scored 10 points apiece in the victory over Fulton, while Vaessen did a little bit of everything with 15 rebounds, nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. Yanos also hauled in 15 rebounds to go with seven points and six steals.
At the one-day Eastland Shootout, the Lady Clippers defeated Dakota with the help of Vaessen’s double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and Pertell’s 14 points.
Pertell led the Lady Clippers’ offense once again against Milledgeville as the senior scored 15 points. Yanos tallied eight points and sophomore Alexa McKendry had seven.
Both Pertell and Yanos had 12 points apiece and Anderson added 10 in the 25-point victory over Pearl City. Yanos secured a monster double-double as she also hauled in 13 rebounds. Vaessen had nine boards and Pertell snagged eight rebounds and dished five assists.
Vaessen upped her rebounding tally in the win against Polo as she recorded 17 to go with seven points. Yanos was the only Lady Clipper to score in double digits with 11 points and the only one to have a double-double as she grabbed 14 rebounds.
In the streak snapping loss to Eastland, Yanos led the offense with nine points and Vaessen had a team-high 12 rebounds.
