AMBOY – The old cliché says a basketball team wants to be clicking on all cylinders at the end of the season rather than the beginning.
For the Amboy girls hoopers, they’ve been clicking all year. However, entering the postseason with a 23-7 record, on a six-game winning streak, and have won 14 of their last 15 contests, all cylinders are at maximum basketball pressure.
The first game of the IHSA Class 1A St. Bede Regional for the No. 2-seeded Lady Clippers is the semifinal against No. 10 Putnam County Tuesday, Feb. 18, which is after press time.
If Amboy wins, they’ll play in the regional championship against the winner of the No. 3 Marquette/No. 5 St. Bede seminal also played on Tuesday.
Before the postseason started, the Lady Clippers kept the winning alive with victories against Fulton, Morrison, and Earlville.
Amboy outscored Fulton by four points in the fourth quarter to win their game, 34-31, on Monday, Feb. 10.
Senior Addison Pertell led the scoring with 10 points, while senior Tyrah Vaessen had six, juniors Jillian Anderson and Bella Yanos (led the team with 10 rebounds) had five each, junior Ellie McLaughlin and sophomore Alexa McKendry scored three each, and senior Emily Sachs pitched in two.
In a 46-39 victory over Morrison on Tuesday, Feb. 11, Pertell had a game high 18 points, Anderson added 15, Sachs and Yanos pitched in six each, and Vaessen had one point. Sachs had a team-high seven rebounds and Vaessen led with three assists.
In the regular season finale, the Lady Clippers defeated Earlville 54-21 for win No. 23.
Pertell’s offensive production continued as she recorded a game high 15 points. Vaessen and Anderson tallied 11 each, Sachs had nine, senior Kenley Wilson knocked in three, Yanos and McLaughlin pitched in two each, and senior Gloria Parker added one point.
