SUBLETTE – School may not have been in session Monday, Oct. 14 because of Columbus Day, but a planned 2.95 mile run around Shady Oaks Country Club did happen as Amboy High School hosted its Columbus Day Cross Country Invitational.
There were runners from 36 different schools including Byron, Forreston, Ashton-Franklin Center, Putnam County, Hinkley-Big Rock, Kewanee, Bureau Valley, Mendota, Fieldcrest, Morrison, Oregon, Marquette, St. Bede, Seneca, Somonauk, Newman, Stillman Valley, and more.
The winner of the boys varsity race was Winnebago senior Nicolai Martino with a time of 15:11.60 to help Winnebago finish second in the team standings with 59 points. Elmwood won with 55 points and Amboy took 12th with 241 points.
Amboy sophomore Henry Nichols finished 30th with a time of 16:53.20, senior Atticus Horner was 80th with a time of 18:42.20, and freshman Landon Carter ran a 19:54.30 for 105th.
There were 161 runners in the boys varsity race.
“Meet wise, I think it went very well. The weather was great and all the teams competed really well. Some of the scores were really close, which was pretty cool to see,” said Amboy cross country coach Michael Robinson. “I would like to boost the numbers up again but with the change in schedules for Election Day, it might be hard.”
In the girls varsity contest, Winnebago won the team portion with 49 points, while Byron took second with 92. Amboy was 15th with 340 points. The individual winner was Aurora Central Catholic junior Cecilia Hilby with an 18:16.20.
Amboy’s best finish was from sophomore Maddie Althaus as she finished in 23:39.40 for 71st, followed by senior Addison Pertell’s 23:56.80 for 76th, and senior Natalie Pratt’s 86th-place time of 24:25.40.
“Team wise, we did alright. the girls ran some good times for the course and the boys did as well,” Robinson said. “We had some sickness and nagging soreness going on so we had to power through that. All in all I was happy with it.”
The boys frosh/soph race was won by Byron sophomore Braden Dietrich, the boys open race was won by Aurora Central Catholic senior Chris Ginocchio, and the girls open race was won by Byron freshman Addison Helms.
