ERIE – One Amboy-LaMoille boys’ track team member qualified for the state track meet after the Clippers participated in the Erie Class 1A Boys’ Sectional Track Meet on June 11.
Junior Brock Loftus will represent the Clippers at the state meet in the 3200-meter run. While Loftus finished in fourth place in the sectional and only the top two earn automatic bids, Loftus’s time of 10:11.62 just snuck in under the state qualifying standard of 10:12.64.
The IHSA Class 1A State Track & Field Meet will be held on Thursday, June 17 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
The Clippers had plenty of other competitors in numerous events at the sectional.
In the 100-meter dash, Kye Koch was 17th in a time of 12.14 and Wyatt Lundquist came in 27th at 13.17.
Ben Henrikson just missed a trip to state in the 200-meter dash. He took fifth place with clocking of 23.97, barely falling short of the state qualifying time of 23.11.
Amboy-LaMoille had two runners each in the 800- and 1600-meter runs. In the 800, Kyler McNinch finished seventh in 2:12.95 and Calvin Deering was 25th in 2:42.12. In the 1600, Loftus came in fourth with a time of 4:51.57 and McNinch was seventh in 4:57.56.
The Clippers had two relay teams finish in the top 10. The 4x100-meter group of Koch, Kelton Schwamberger, Lundquist and Henrikson finished 10th in 48.3, while the same foursome competed in the 4x200 relay where they took eighth place in 1:38.9.
In field events, Amboy-LaMoille had entries in the shot put, discus, long jump and triple jump.
In the shot put, Ian Sundberg had the 11th-best throw with a distance of 11.61 meters (38-1) and Deering was 16th at 10.46 meters (34-4).
Sundberg placed 10th in the discus with a distance of 32.96 meters (108-1.5) and Trevor Carroll was 24th at 21.25 meters (69-8.5).
Henrikson and Schwamberger participated in the long jump with Henrikson taking sixth at 5.75 meters (18-10) and Schwamberger placing 19th at 4.91 meters (16-1).
In the triple jump, Lundquist landed in 10th place with a measurement of 10.61 meters (34-10).
Sherrard captured the sectional team title with 87 points over second-place Port Byron Riverdale with 83 points. Rounding out the top five teams were Erie (63), Morrison (58) and Rock Island Alleman (56). The rest of the top 10 teams included Taylor Ridge Rockridge (50), Aledo Mercer County (40), Fulton (21), Sterling Newman (19) and Orion (17). The final five teams were Bureau Valley (16), Cambridge (14), West Carroll (14), Amboy-LaMoille (11) and Milledgeville (4).
