AURORA – Three Amboy wrestlers extended their season by at least another week after success in the Aurora Central Catholic Class 1A Regional on Feb. 2.

Avery Shaw took second-place honors in the 195-pound weight class, while Zach Wicaryus (132) and Dorian Barlow (182) both finished in third place, which qualifies all three for the sectional round. The top three wrestlers in each weight class get to move on.

Shaw only wrestled in two matches, pinning Mendota’s Aaron Garza in just one minute to reach the championship bout. There, Shaw was pinned in 1:03 by Angel Jaimes of Aurora Christian.

Wicaryus also had two matches. He opened up with a 15-0 loss to Charles Korey of St. Bede before pinning Tyler Preston of Mendota at 1:42 of the third-place bout.

Barlow had three opponents on the day and he beat two to finish in third place. Barlow’s first match was a narrow 9-6 loss to Julian Navarro of Yorkville Christian. But he rebounded with a pair of pins – getting Adam Matza of Ottawa Marquette at the 1:30 mark and finishing off Steven Stotler of Aurora Central Catholic in just 54 seconds.

Also wrestling for Amboy but not placing were Zack Ceretto (126), Brad Gazza (138), Hayden Montavon (145) and Austin Norman (170).

In the team standings, Aurora Christian won the title with 267.5 points, followed by St. Bede (127.5), Aurora Central Catholic (87), Somonauk (85.5) and Ottawa Marquette (80). Mendota was sixth with 41.5 points, Mooseheart had 41, and Amboy and Yorkville Christian tied with 38.

Wicaryus, Barlow and Shaw will compete in the Byron Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 9.
