Citizens push for owners to pick up property

AMBOY Although city ordinances for Amboy residents not picking up their property are a common theme throughout the Amboy City Council meetings, they usually don’t command much attention or discussion.

However, during the meeting on May 20, four attendees made it known they were disappointed with the state of some properties in Amboy city limits.

They asked if the people who receive a citation have a certain time to respond, which city officials responded with yes. Another question was if people move rubbish from one part of their yard to another does it offset the citation. The answer was no.

All other inquiries about city ordinances for an unfit external property were answered by Amboy Mayor Frank Stenzel stating warning letters have been sent out and the city is researching ways to find funds to to legally correct the situation.

After the ordinance discussion subsided, approvals were made for the 2024-25 general, water, and sewer budgets, the 2024 MFT bid of $72,049.92 to Struck & Irwin Paving Inc. to repave roads, $24,840.00 to Sewer Ponds for an Aquafix chemical order, $21,250.00 to purchase police body cameras, the zoning change to light industry for Jared Zellhoffer at 215 E. Bluff St., $1,350.00 to clean the Pankhurst Memorial Library windows, Amanda Walter’s resignation from the Depot Commission and the appointment of Gina McCoy to the commission.

Other concerns were made as a mention of people letting their dogs use the former Amboy Junior High property as a restroom and a rave has been taking place on a city property where both Lee County and Amboy Police have been involved.

The council discussed putting a doggy dumpster type of device to resolute the issue on city property, while Quad City lawyers are looking into ordinances about the rave on the northwest side of Amboy, which has been advertised on social media such as Facebook and Tik Tok.
