LaMOILLE – The LaMoille Holiday Classic held its third rendition Dec. 26-28.
Although the tournament has been played the last three years, this year was the first year the Amboy boys basketball team was involved.
And it was a memorable appearance as the Clippers finished 2-1 during the tournament to earn third place. The squad is now 6-5 on the season.
“I’m really proud of how we competed for three days. We came up short of our goal of winning the tournament, but that didn’t ruin the last day for us,” said first-year Amboy coach Tyson Powers. “We knew we still wanted to finish third and get out of the tournament with a winning record.
“We are really excited about where we are at heading into the second half of the season sitting at 6-5 with the full conference schedule ahead of us. We are hoping the LaMoille Holiday Classic will be a springboard for us to start the new year.”
A week after playing Leland, the Panthers were the Clippers first opponent of the classic on Thursday, Dec. 26. After a 51-51 tie at the end of regulation, Amboy outscored its foe 8-4 in overtime to earn a 59-55 victory.
Junior Rylan McNinch scored a game high 21 points, while senior Eddie Jones put in 13, junior Ezra Parker 13, senior Quinn Leffelman nine, and freshman Bryson Deery two.
The next night, Amboy fell to Galva 37-31 in a semifinal, which put the Clippers in the third-place game.
Against Galva, Leffelman led the squad with 12 points, Parker scored 10, Jones added six, and Deery chipped in three.
In the third-place game on Saturday, Dec. 28, the Clippers faced the tournament host, the Lions. Amboy won 55-45 to earn third place in the tournament.
Jones and Leffelman tied for a team-high 16 points, while McNinch tallied 10, Parker recorded eight, and Deery added five.
Amboy was represented on the LaMoille Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team by Eddie Jones. He was joined by LaMoille’s Brayden Klein, Leland’s Geno Schwager, Polo’s Gus Mumford, Depue’s Vance Hayes, Galva’s MJ Louck and JP Sloan, Low-Point Washburn’s Evan Schumacher and Kody Knecht, and Calvary Christian Academy’s Ty Zeller.
