AMBOY – When the Shell Express Lane in Amboy began serving a Thanksgiving Dinner in support of Shop with the Sheriff Fundraiser six years ago, only 34 meals were purchased.
This year, 230-plus portions of ham turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, stuffing, roll, and dessert were consumed by gracious donators on Friday, Nov. 15.
“It’s awesome. I love that everyone comes together for this. It’s all about the kids,” said Tabitha Berogan, who has worked at Shell for the last 14 years and has been the manager for the last 10 years. “It’s really cool the community stands behind us every year for this.”
Berogan, an Amboy native and 2004 Amboy High School graduate, added the 230-plus is a new record as 215 Thanksgiving meals were purchased in 2023.
Also, both years, Shell ran out of ham, corn, and dessert before the 2 p.m. end time.
At 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, there was only enough turkey to fill half of one roster. Berogan and her crew had prepared six 25-pound turkeys for the annual event.
