Vaessen, Loftus set personal records at state meet

PEORIA — Two Amboy-LaMoille cross country runners Margaret Vaessen and Brock Loftus competed at the Class 1A State Cross Country Finals on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Vaessen finished with a personal record of 19:12 placing 81st out of 215 competitors. She beat her 2018 finish time by 10 seconds and moved up six places. This was Vaessen’s fourth trip to state. She was on a state qualifying team in 2016 and 2017 and qualified as an individual in 2018.

The champion was Lianna Surtz from Aurora (Rosary), who also won our regional and sectional races, with a time of 16:41. Winnebago took first place as a team.

On his first trip to state, Loftus, a sophomore, set his personal record clocking in at 16:22 with a 93rd place finish out of 209 runners.

The champion was Drew Rogers of Herscher with a time of 14:30. Monticello placed first as a team.
