Sunny skies greet competitors during AFPD 5K run/walk

AMBOY — The Amboy Fire Protection District couldn’t have ask for a more beautiful spring day than it had for the Third Annual 5K Run/Walk on April 8. The bright sun helped temper the cool breeze that set the stage for the 8 a.m. race.

The 63 participants and a crowd of spectators listened to a greeting by Fire Chief Jeff Bryant and invocation by Pastor Brian McWethy, Pastor of Grace Fellowship Church and Amboy Fire Department Chaplin. The participants made their start on East Steet, just north of the Fire Station and finished at the Fire Station parking lot.

The Rock River Road Runners Club of Sterling provided official timing for the event. The RRRC, a non-profit voluntary organization, promotes and encourages walking and running, and the education of the public to its benefits

Trese McNinch and Joe Welty led the field from the start and finished together as overall female and male winners. The race coincided with a fundraising breakfast held inside the Fire Station from 7 to 11 a.m. The breakast, well attended by community members, kept the volunteers busy throughout the morning. Race particiants joined the breakfast group as they completed the race. Chief Bryant said that the next race will be held on Saturday, June 16, in 2018. No results were available at press time on the amount raised by the two events.
