Sublette to host car show, tractor pull

SUBLETTE — On the weekend of Sept. 8 and 9, the village of Sublette will host two annual events for the public to enjoy.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, the annual car show will be held along Route 52 and across from the Country Village Meats from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
On average, 200 cars come every year for this show. This year, the Chicago/ Milwaukee Hudson Club will be bringing some cars to the event.  As well as Kaiser, Fraiser, Willis Overland and Nash. There will be a special Chevrolet display across from the Vaessen Chevy dealer. 3-D Sound will be there to announce the show and there will be food available on the grounds. There are spaces available for swap meet of auto parts at no charge.

“There are Kaiser and Fraiser collectors right here in Sublette,” said Don Dinges. “We have about 20 of those cars right here in town.”

On Friday night, there will be a pre-show dinner at La Fiesta. The Dutch treat dinner is open to all.

On Sunday, make plans to attend the annual Pullin’ in the Park truck and tractor pull at Sublette Centennial Park. It all starts at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $20 for pullers. Check in time is 8 a.m. Must be 16 years of age to pull. Those under 18 must have signed parent consent form.

For spectators, admission is $5 with those 12 and under free.

The truck and tractor pull started about 10 years ago, a suggestion from Ed McLaughlin and has been made possible with all the volunteer labor and monetary donations. They built the track and in the week prior to the first pull, the area received 9 inches of rain, they postponed the event for a week, the ground was still saturated but everyone had a great time.

The park was built for the kids and that is what the organizers highlighted. For many years they would give away a girls bike and a boys bike to kids who attended the pull. They also host a Calcutta auction – where folks take chances on pullers and the winner takes 50 percent of the pot.

The pull averages about 100 pullers, with a total of nine classes that will pull. Some are ISP sanctioned and others are not.

Kids are given the opportunity to ride on a special trailer and lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the day.

The cost to enter is $20 and most of the pullers come from within a 25-mile radius.

The acreage that is now the Sublette Centennial Park was either donated or sold to Sublette by Henry Renick.  All proceeds from the pull are used to maintain the park.

3-D Sound will be on hand to do the announcing and sponsors names will appear along the  track. Weather permitting, there will probably be between 500 and 600 in attendance. There will also be food vendors selling food and a small beer garden.

The festivities are scaled back this year to support the Saturday event, Pulling for Ryon. A benefit to support a local young man that was injured in a farming accident this spring.
