CHARLESTON – The Amboy-LaMoille Lady Clippers definitely saved their best for last. The Lady Clippers placed in three events and set four school records as they competed in the IHSA Class 1A Girls’ State Track Meet held May 18-20 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Amboy-LaMoille took third place in the state in two events. Katelynn Pankhurst finished third in the long jump with an effort of 17-8. She achieved that mark in the preliminaries, which was good enough for third place and a trip to the finals. She was able to maintain that third-place showing at the end of the finals. In taking third with that 17-8 measurement, Pankhurst also set a new school record.
First place in the long jump went to Paige Yoder of Rockford (Keith Country Day) with a jump of 18-1, while Bryn Guthrie of Litchfield took second place with a leap of 17-11.
The Lady Clippers’ 4x400-meter relay team also captured third-place honors in the state and established a new school record in the process. The team of Cassidy Corcoran, Pankhurst, Madeline Foster and Ashley Althaus ran a 4:11.82 and finished first in their heat. It was the ninth best time in the preliminaries. Then in the finals, the foursome turned on the jets and moved up six spots with a blazing time 4:05.76 to finish third and set a new school record.
St. Joseph-Ogden was the state champion in the 4x400 with a time of 4:03.26 and Seneca claimed second with a time of 4:05.20.
Amboy-LaMoille’s 4x800-meter relay team finished eighth in the state. The squad of Kaitlyn Ortgiesen, Erin Hosto, Margaret Vaessen and Megan Grady finished 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 10:04.69. Then in the finals, the group moved up two spots to eighth with a time of 9:57.95, setting a new school record in the process. Deer Creek-Mackinaw took home the top prize in the 4x800 in a time of 9:40.25.
The Lady Clippers competed in three other events at the state meet, but none advanced to the finals. Althaus set a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.90 and narrowly missed making the finals.
The 4x100-meter relay team had a preliminary round time of 52.33. Runners were Cassidy Corcoran, Althaus, Sidney Corcoran and Pankhurst.
The 4x200-meter relay ran a preliminary time of 1:49.01. The team was comprised of Cassidy Corcoran, Althaus, Sidney Corcoran and Pankhurst.
