AMBOY – Amboy High School varsity girls’ head basketball coach Mike McCracken was recognized for the Lady Clippers’ successful 2019-20 season by being chosen the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” for Class 1A schools in District 11.
McCracken guided the Amboy girls’ team to a 31-2 overall record and a conference championship 10-0 mark in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference.
The Lady Clippers finished the regular season with their only loss coming to Rock Falls.
The team began its post-season tournament play by defeating Ashton-Franklin Center in its opening game and then taking down Fulton in the regional championship.
Amboy opened the sectional tournament with a victory over Galena before falling to Lanark (Eastland) in the sectional title game on a three-pointer by Eastland in the final seconds of the game. Eastland went on to win the Class 1A state championship.
The Lady Clippers finished the season with a sparkling 31-2 record. Another outstanding accomplishment during the season came on Feb. 4 when junior Abi Payne went over the 1,000-point mark for her career during a game against Forreston.
