SUBLETTE — On Tuesday, Aug. 16, some Sublette residents had a visit from a man that had found contacts through the internet searching for the gravesite of his great-grandmother, Mattie Hewitt.

Coming from Providence, R.I., Charlie Hewitt met with Don Dinges, Chris Leffelman, Doug Erbes, and Maurice Zimmerlein. John Stenzel was unable to attend. After lunch at La Fiesta and a tour of the village, including the Union Church that Mattie attended, the Sublette Evergreen Cemetery on Inlet Road was visited, and where the gravesite was found.

Charlie’s interest in his family history stemmed from his possession of Mattie’s daily diary from 1881 and several photos of that era. She passed away in 1882 at age 34, shortly after giving birth to a surviving son.
