Lady Clippers win Holiday Tournament

AMBOY – The Amboy Lady Clippers outgunned four opponents by wide margins to capture first-place honors in the Amboy Holiday Tournament. The four wins upped Amboy’s season record to 15-0.

The Lady Clippers opened tournament action with a 59-30 rout of Indian Creek on Dec. 26.

Four players scored over eight points for AHS, led by Mallory Powers with 24 tallies. Powers tied with a team-high eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Gabby Jones added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Abi Payne provided nine points, a team-leading 11 assists and four steals. Also aiding the cause were Olivia Dinges with eight points, Kyleigh Donna with four points and eight caroms, Ashley Althaus with two points, six boards and three assists, and Brianna Blaine with two points and five rebounds.

Amboy sprinted out to a gigantic first-quarter lead and took down Roanoke-Benson, 69-30, on Dec. 27. AHS exploded for 34 first-quarter points and held its opponent to just six.

Payne topped the team in three categories with 19 points, seven assists and four steals. She connected on eight of nine field goal attempts including draining all three of her three-point tries. 

Powers was right behind with 17 points, five assists and three steals, while Donna hit double-digits in scoring with 11 markers. She also collected seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Also contributing to the victory were Dinges with eight points, Blaine with six points and four boards, Althaus with four points and four caroms, Jones and Tori Daniels each with two tallies, and Haidyn Zimmerly with three rebounds.

Ottawa Marquette had a size advantage on Amboy in round three, but it didn’t matter as the Lady Clippers coasted to a 64-23 triumph on Dec. 28. Amboy led 22-4 after the opening stanza and held a 43-10 halftime advantage.

Powers (20 points, eight assists, four steals) and Payne (16 points, six assists, six steals) provided plenty of punch for the victors. Jones chipped in with seven points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while Donna, Blaine and Eden Lindenmeyer added four points apiece. Also getting in on the fun were Dinges with three points and four rebounds, and Althaus, Daniels and Hannah Blanton each with a bucket.

Amboy wrapped up the tournament title for the second straight year with a 51-36 verdict over Lena-Winslow on Dec. 30. The Lady Clippers held a narrow 24-20 halftime lead, but came out of the locker room on fire by outscoring Le-Win, 23-3, in the third frame to take control.

Powers paced the team with 16 points and five steals, followed by Payne with eight points, five assists and five steals. Jones pumped in eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists, Donna dropped in six points and snared seven caroms, Althaus contributed six points, four steals and four assists, and Dinges had five points and six rebounds.

Powers and Payne were named to the all-tournament team.
