AMBOY — On Dec. 27 the Amboy girls basketball team started their busy week by opening the tournament against Hall. The game was close all the way, and Amboy came away with a hard fought 35-31 victory.
Addison Pertell had a big game against the Lady Red Devils with a team-high 18 points (shot 50 percent from the field) and six rebounds. Maeve Larson dropped in seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Also against Hall, Courtney Ortgieson pulled down 14 rebounds and scored five points, Elly Jones scored three points, had three rebounds, dished out two assists, and recorded two steals. Tyrah Vaessen scored a basket and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Game 2 of the tournament was against Roanoke-Benson. The Rockets opened up the tournament by defeating Serena 51-50.
The Amboy varsity girls jumped out to an 11-6 first-quarter lead. The Lady Clippers increased their lead behind a second-quarter 14-5 surge. Amboy led 25-11 at halftime and won the game 53-26.
Jones had a big game with 17 points (on 6-of-8 shooting from the field), three 3-point field goals, and two assists.
Pertell scored in double figures for the second-straight night with 10, while leading the team with four assists. Pertell joined Larson to finish the game with the team lead of two steals. Larson added seven points and seven rebounds.
Vaessen chipped in five points, six rebounds, and three assists. Ortgiesen had double figure rebounds with 10, sophomore Emily Sachs and freshman Kiera Karlson had four points each, Gloria Parker and Ellie McLaughlin had two points apiece. Karlson and Jillian Anderson had two assists each.
Amboy’s third game of their holiday tournament was against Serena.
Both teams struggled on offense, but Amboy’s defense had the upper hand as Amboy held Serena to only four baskets in the game to help the Lady Clippers win, 31-16.
Vaessen shot 5-of-9 from the field for a team-high 10 points. Vaessen added three rebounds and three steals. Jones was Amboy’s second-leading scorer with eight points but was the team leader in both steals (four) and assists (three).
Pertell had two 3-pointers for six points, while the guard also finished with seven rebounds and two assists. Sachs had five points and Larson led Amboy with nine rebounds and added three steals, two assists, two blocks, and two points.
After three solid opponents, Amboy went into the holiday tournament championship against Somonauk.
The Lady Clippers exploded to an 18-3 lead after an almost perfect first quarter.
In the second quarter, Amboy outscored Somonauk 16-10 for a 34-13 Lady Clipper halftime lead.
The red and white continued its solid offense and great defense to come away with a 56-22 victory for their fourth victory of the week.
The Lady Clippers won the Amboy Holiday Tournament Championship for the first time since 2019.
Jones and Ortgiesen each scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack. Ortgiesen also had ix rebounds and three assists, while Jones added four boards and three steals.
Larson recorded nine points, six rebounds, and three steals. Pertell added eight points, six assists, and two steals. Rounding out Amboy’s scoring was Sachs (7), Karlson (4), and Anderson (2).
Elly Jones and Addison Pertell were both named to the Amboy Holiday Tournament Team.
Amboy ends the tournament with a 12-1 regular season record.
