Lady Clippers win 2019 Regional title

ANNAWAN – The Amboy Lady Clippers swept their way to two sizeable victories to claim the title of the Annawan Class 1A Girls’ Regional Basketball Tournament.

Amboy’s opening-round game was a lopsided 63-30 triumph over Galva on Feb. 6.

Ten players scored for Amboy. Mallory Powers led the way with 13 points and nine assists. Abi Payne was next with 12 points and six assists. Kelsey Stewart also scored in double figures with 10 points while dishing out four assists. All three guards shot over 50 percent in the game.

Also contributing to the big win were Noelle Jones (seven points, three rebounds, two steals), Breanna Fisher (four points, 10 rebounds), Ashley Althaus (six points, seven rebounds), Olivia Dinges (four points), Madelyn McLaughlin (three points), Rachal Lachat (two points) and Eden Lindenmeyer (two points).

In the championship game, Amboy pulled away in the fourth quarter to post a 57-38 win over Annawan on Feb. 9.

The Lady Clippers sprinted out to a 9-2 lead and led 15-8 after the opening quarter. Annawan came back to cut the deficit to five (33-28) at halftime. Amboy opened the gap to 10 (48-38) after three frames, and then pulled away in the fourth to win by a comfortable margin.

Balanced scoring was the story for Amboy. Powers topped the team with 13 points and she added six rebounds and four assists. Fisher had a great shooting game and finished with 12 tallies. She also had a career-high 15 rebounds and was a key factor in defending Annawan’s post players. Payne contributed 10 points, 10 assists and four steals, while Donna had 10 points and eight rebounds and Jones chipped in with eight markers and six caroms. Jones and Donna also helped Fisher limit Annawan’s post players to a combined 10 points. Hope Sachs and Althaus came off the bench to help Amboy’s defense and each scored a basket. Althaus also collected five rebounds.

It was Amboy’s fourth regional championship in six years. The Lady Clippers (25-2) were able to end Annawan’s streak of nine regional titles in a row.
