Lady Clippers see streak end against Eastland

AMBOY — The Amboy Lady Clippers saw their winning 17-game winning streak come to an end after a 45-24 loss the Eastland on Jan. 18 at the AHS gym.

Amboy jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but then got outscored 13-2 the rest of the first quarter. Amboy’s shooting woes continued throughout the game as it hit on only 17 percent of its field goal attempts. The Lady Clippers missed 45 shots from the floor and seven from the free throw line.

Elly Jones was high scorer for Amboy with 15 points. The other four starters could only manage nine points combined. Jones added six rebounds and four steals. Courtney Ortgiesen led the squad with seven rebounds, followed by Maeve Larson with six caroms and three steals. Tyrah Vaessen and Addison Pertell each pulled down four boards and Vaessen collected three steals.

Amboy played hard, but could not overcome its cold shooting.


The Lady Clippers traveled to Forreston on Jan. 20 and came away with a 31-27 victory.

Amboy fell behind 9-2 after the opening stanza, but reversed things in the second period with an 8-2 count to trail by just one at the half. The Lady Clippers pulled away with a 14-4 third quarter before Forreston mounted a fourth-quarter comeback that came up short.

Jones and Pertell were each two of two from the charity stripe in the fourth frame and Ortgiesen was one of two from the line to help preserve the win.

Larson paced the victory with nine points, while she also provided four rebounds and three steals. Pertell and Ortgiesen both tallied eight points and Ortgiesen led with 11 rebounds. Pertell added five boards, three assists and two steals, while Vaessen (seven rebounds, four assists, two steals) and Jones (four points, four steals, two assists) aided the cause.

The Lady Clippers are 19-2 overall and 5-1 in the NUIC South Division standings.
