Lady Clippers open season in Oregon Tournament

The Amboy varsity girls’ basketball team opened the season with four games in the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament.

Game one was against a very tall Lena-Winslow team on Nov. 15. The game was full of first-game jitters and turnovers, and Amboy lost in overtime by a 58-55 count.

The Lady Clippers had good balanced scoring with four players scoring over nine points. Noelle Jones and Taylor Stevens led the attack with 12 points each. Breanna Fisher chipped in with 11 points and Kelsey Stewart added nine. Jones pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and Fisher grabbed seven caroms, while Kallie Appleman had four points, two assists and two steals.

Amboy went up against its old conference rival Prophetstown in the second game on Nov. 17, and the Lady Clippers dropped a 46-43 decision.

Abi Payne dropped in 13 points to lead Amboy. Jones was next with eight points and she also provided six rebounds. Rachel Lachat chipped in with seven points, Appleman had five points and five rebounds, Logan Winters and Stevens had four points apiece, Steven dished out five assists and Payne swiped four steals.

The Lady Clippers played two games on Nov. 18, starting with a 50-43 triumph over Milledgeville.

Jones paced the squad with 13 points, while Stewart pumped in 12 points. Payne was next with eight points, Fisher provided six points, six rebounds and three steals, and Winters added four points, eight rebounds and four steals. Also, Lachat dealt four assists, Stevens had three assists, and Appleman had three points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Amboy and Kewanee played a tight contest in the second game of the day before the Lady Boilers prevailed, 37-32, as the Lady Clippers struggled on offense in the second half.

Payne and Lachat tallied eight and seven points, respectively, for the Lady Clippers. Jones and Winters topped the rebounding chart with seven apiece, and Jones handed out three assists.

Amboy journeyed to Hinckley-Big Rock on Nov. 21, and after a slow start, the Lady Clippers outscored the Lady Royals, 19-1, in the second quarter on their way to a 52-22 victory.

Jones paced the offense with 20 points and also led with nine rebounds. Stewart canned eight points and came away with four steals, while Stevens had seven points, four rebounds and two assists. Also, Ashley Althaus had six points, three steals and two assists, and Payne led with four steals and three assists. Appleman, Winters and Kyleigh Donna all chipped in with four points apiece, Winters grabbed seven rebounds, and Appleman, Fisher and Lachat each had four caroms.
